The Oyo State Government has commenced a waste segregation initiative at the State Secretariat as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and improve waste management practices. The initiative marks a significant shift toward structured waste disposal, with authorities aiming to instill a culture of proper sorting at the source.
The programme, implemented with support from Altak Industries, Ibadan, through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), involves the distribution of colour-coded waste bins across key offices within the Secretariat. The bins are designated for paper, plastic, and organic waste, making it easier for workers to separate refuse appropriately.
Speaking on the development, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, noted that the initiative is designed to lead by example. He emphasized that the government intends to demonstrate best practices within its own institutions before extending such measures to the wider public.
Aderinto explained that proper waste segregation would enhance recycling efforts, reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, and create economic opportunities within the recycling value chain. He added that the initiative aligns with broader environmental goals aimed at fostering a cleaner and more sustainable state.
The government has, therefore, called on residents of Oyo State to adopt similar waste management practices in their homes and communities. It stressed that collective participation is essential to achieving a healthier environment and ensuring long-term sustainability across the state.
