The race for the Agodi Government House ahead of the 2027 elections gathered momentum on Wednesday as the Interim National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Taofeek Arapaja, formally declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship election.
Arapaja made his ambition known during a high-level meeting with members of the party’s State Working Committee and PDP chairmen across the 33 local government areas at the party secretariat in Oke-Ado, Ibadan.
The former Deputy Governor arrived to a rousing استقبال from party faithful and leaders, including the state chairman, Hon. Dayo Ogungbenro, alongside other key stakeholders. His visit drew a large crowd of supporters and political associates, turning the party office into a lively gathering.
Addressing party leaders, Arapaja described his governorship ambition as a “lifelong odyssey” built on over three decades of political experience and grassroots engagement.
“Oyo State does not need a newcomer or a political experiment, We need a steady, experienced hand to ensure that the progress started by Governor Seyi Makinde is sustained and accelerated.” he said
Arapaja, a long-time associate of late Ibadan political figure Lamidi Adedibu, said his ambition is rooted in loyalty, experience, and a deep understanding of the state’s political structure.
He highlighted his political journey, which includes serving as a two-term local government chairman, member of the House of Representatives, Deputy Governor, and Nigeria’s Ambassador to Iran and Jordan, noting that his experience positions him to deliver effective leadership.
While commending Governor Seyi Makinde for the “Omituntun” development agenda, Arapaja pledged to consolidate on the administration’s achievements across infrastructure, education, agriculture, and healthcare, as well as improve workers’ welfare and pension sustainability.
Party leaders who responded to his declaration praised his contributions to the stability and growth of the PDP in Oyo State, particularly his roles as former Deputy National Chairman (South) and National Secretary.
They expressed confidence in his political experience and assured him of their support ahead of the party’s primary elections.
With the PDP primaries drawing closer, Arapaja has emerged as one of the leading figures to formally declare interest in succeeding Governor Makinde, signaling intensified political activity within the ruling party in Oyo State.
Several party stalwarts, including federal and state lawmakers as well as grassroots mobilisers, accompanied Arapaja to the meeting, underscoring the growing momentum behind his governorship bid.
