Tension rippled through Ibadan on Tuesday after a viral video showing a heavily loaded truck conveying dozens of young men from northern Nigeria, motorcycles, and several cows triggered widespread public concern and ignited intense debate across social media platforms.
The footage, recorded on Tuesday by a startled resident, shows a massive blue truck navigating a busy street in Ibadan with young men perched atop motorcycles and livestock strapped within the vehicle. The 90-second clip captures the chaotic scene, including background reactions from onlookers questioning the sudden influx. A concerned woman behind the camera can be heard saying, “Like this now, what is all this? Nobody is going to ask them questions… Look how many bikes there are. Where do they come from like this?”
Another observer injects nervous humour into the situation, joking, “If you want to challenge them, why don’t you go and ask for their bike?”
Despite the levity, the underlying fear in the crowd was unmistakable.
The video quickly dominated conversations on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, garnering thousands of views, reposts, and comments within hours. Users such as @Ike_oluwa03 described the atmosphere in the city as “panic mood,” while others raised concerns about security implications, urban migration pressures, and the possibility of criminal infiltration.
One X user, @dammiedammie35, reacted emotionally, writing, “This happened in Ibadan yesterday o… see northerners with their bikes as they pack themselves full inside trailer.” The post fuelled further speculation about the group’s intentions and destination.
The online reaction soon grew polarized. Some users drew parallels with similar incidents reported in other southern states, citing previous viral clips from Imo and Edo that portrayed sudden movements of northern migrants or alleged clashes. These comparisons intensified fears and revived longstanding debates about demographic shifts, cattle herding routes, and internal migration patterns.
Beyond the online frenzy, some northern commentators condemned the stereotyping triggered by the video. One widely shared post by @engrICO2015 lamented the rising “negative mentality” toward northerners, urging Nigerians to embrace empathy over suspicion.
As of press time, the Oyo State Police Command had not released an official statement on the matter. Community leaders have called for calm while advising residents to avoid spreading unverified claims that could heighten ethnic tensions. Eyewitnesses suggest the truck’s occupants could be seasonal workers or traders arriving for economic activities, a common trend in Ibadan’s expanding commercial sector, but authorities are being urged to investigate the matter thoroughly.
