The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the detention of its officers following allegations of extortion involving operatives of the Special Response Squad (SRS) and personnel stationed at Zenith Bank, Bodija.
In a statement addressing a transfer receipt circulated on social media by @Hon_Jesugbemi and others, the Command said it immediately launched a comprehensive investigation into the claims of extortion by SRS operatives.
According to the Police, findings from the internal review led to the identification of the officer directly involved in the alleged ₦300,000 extortion. The officer has been found culpable and is currently in detention pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings. In addition, the team leader of the operation, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), has been formally queried in line with established regulations.
The Command disclosed that the entire sum of ₦300,000 alleged to have been extorted has been fully recovered. It urged the affected individual to come forward to reclaim the money and voluntarily make a formal statement to enable the Police conclude investigations and apply appropriate disciplinary sanctions.
In a separate incident, officers stationed at Zenith Bank, Bodija, who were accused of extorting ₦30,000 from a member of the public, have also been identified and detained. The Police said the complainant in this case has formally lodged a report, and the matter is currently undergoing internal investigation and orderly room trial in accordance with due process.
The Oyo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to accountability and professionalism, encouraging members of the public whose rights may have been violated or who have been subjected to extortion to report such incidents with credible evidence.
