The Oyo State Government has directed all motorists and traders operating along major roads around Iwo Road to vacate the roads with immediate effect and relocate to the designated bus terminal in the area.
The directive was issued through the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) as part of efforts to restore order and sanity to one of the busiest transport hubs in Ibadan. Authorities said the move is aimed at reducing persistent traffic congestion and improving environmental sanitation.
Chairman of OYRTMA, Adekoya Adesagba, explained that the decision followed observations that many transport operators and traders had abandoned the government-built terminal and returned to roadside activities. This development, he noted, has significantly worsened gridlock in the area.
Adesagba stressed that the indiscriminate parking of vehicles and roadside trading not only obstruct free flow of traffic but also poses serious safety risks to commuters and pedestrians. He described the situation as unacceptable and warned that enforcement measures would be intensified.
He further cautioned that failure to comply with the directive would attract sanctions, adding that the government would not tolerate actions capable of undermining public safety and urban order.
The state government reiterated its commitment to maintaining traffic discipline and building a more organized transport system, urging all stakeholders to cooperate fully in ensuring that the Iwo Road axis becomes safer, cleaner and more efficient for all road users.
