The Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday held what lawmakers described as a productive plenary session, during which key committee reports and policy motions aimed at governance reform, youth empowerment, and revenue regulation were considered.
During the sitting, the House received the report of the House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters and State Honours following its oversight visit to Owode Garage, Oyo Town. The report assessed conditions at the transport hub and evaluated compliance with existing regulations.
Lawmakers also considered the interim report of the Joint Committees on Agriculture and Rural Development, and Commerce and Cooperatives on issues raised by the National Cashew Association of Nigeria.
The House noted that the intervention represents a significant step toward protecting local farmers, enforcing regulations at farm-gate levels, and strengthening value addition within Oyo State’s agricultural sector.
Of particular importance during the session were two motions co-sponsored by members of the House, targeting youth unemployment and illegal revenue practices across the state.
The first motion called for the establishment of the Oyo State Digital Talent Revolution Initiative (OYO-DTRI). The proposed initiative is designed to equip unemployed youths with globally relevant digital skills, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analytics, digital marketing, and cloud computing.
Lawmakers said the initiative would position Oyo State to better compete in the global digital economy while addressing rising youth unemployment.
The second motion addressed the widespread complaints over illegal revenue collection, multiple taxation, and harassment of commercial drivers, tricyclists, and motorcyclists across the state.
According to the House, the motion seeks to:
- End multiple and unauthorised taxation
- Protect transport operators from harassment
- Establish a harmonised and transparent revenue collection framework that balances government needs with citizens’ welfare
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to policies that promote economic inclusion, protect livelihoods, and strengthen institutional accountability across Oyo State.
Further legislative action on the motions and committee recommendations is expected in subsequent plenary sessions.
