The successful rescue of Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians comparing the operation to the unresolved abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Mrs. Adegoke and her children, who were abducted in Ibadan on June 3, regained their freedom on Saturday following a coordinated operation by the Force Intelligence Department Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT). Police authorities said the rescue was achieved through intensive intelligence gathering, surveillance and tactical operations that led operatives to the kidnappers’ hideout.
While many Nigerians have applauded the professionalism of the security operatives and expressed relief that the victims were rescued unharmed, the operation has also sparked debate online due to Mrs. Adegoke’s relationship to Chief Adebayo Adelabu, a former Minister of Power and prominent Oyo State political figure.
Photos and videos circulating online, including images of the rescued victims at Chief Adelabu’s residence, have fueled political discussions, with some commentators questioning why the victims were rescued within days while teachers and schoolchildren abducted during the May 15 attack on schools in Oriire remain in captivity several weeks later.
Several social media users argued that the contrast between both cases highlights concerns about the speed of security responses to different kidnapping incidents. Some suggested that the prominence of the victims may have attracted greater attention from security agencies.
Others, however, rejected such comparisons, insisting that the two incidents involved different circumstances and operational realities. According to this group, kidnapping cases vary in complexity, motives, intelligence availability, terrain, number of victims involved and the tactics employed by criminal groups.
Supporters of the police operation noted that security agencies often handle rescue missions based on intelligence assessments and operational opportunities that may not be visible to the public. They warned against politicising security operations or drawing conclusions without access to all relevant facts.
The debate comes at a time when concern remains high over the fate of teachers, pupils and other residents abducted during attacks on schools in Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area. Despite ongoing rescue efforts by security agencies, the victims have yet to regain their freedom.
For many observers, the discussions surrounding the latest rescue operation reflect broader public concerns about insecurity and the need for authorities to ensure that every kidnapping victim receives the same level of urgency and commitment, regardless of status, background or political affiliation.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has maintained that the rescue of Mrs. Adegoke and her children was the outcome of sustained intelligence-led operations, while efforts continue to apprehend fleeing members of the kidnapping syndicate and secure the release of other victims across the country.
