The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said that Nigeria’s challenges are largely self-inflicted, blaming political leaders for the mismanagement of the country’s vast resources.
Obi made the remarks on Sunday during a Thanksgiving service marking the 50th anniversary of Oyo State at St Peter’s Cathedral, Aremo, Ibadan.
Addressing the congregation, the former Anambra State governor urged Nigerians to continually pray for political leaders, noting that poor leadership not lack of resources is responsible for the nation’s struggles.
“Please remember us politicians in your prayers. We are the problem of Nigeria. Nigeria is not a poor country; it is poorly governed,” Obi said.
“Pray that God should touch our hearts to use public money for the public good. If we do this, Nigeria will be good.”
Obi also praised the developmental strides recorded in Ibadan and across Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde, describing the state capital as historic, transformative, and central to Nigeria’s intellectual history.
“It is always an honour to be in Ibadan. This is a very historic town where many Nigerians were formed. It is a city of knowledge and a city of hope,” he said.
He noted that Ibadan had witnessed significant upliftment under Makinde’s administration, adding that the transformation of the state was evident to first-time and returning visitors alike.
Obi expressed optimism about the future of Oyo State as it marks five decades of existence, offering prayers for continued progress and effective leadership.
“As we celebrate these 50 years, I pray that the next 50 years of this great state will be exemplary. May God Almighty continue to bless our governor, his family, and his entire team,” he said.
The former presidential candidate also recalled his early involvement at the onset of Makinde’s administration, stating that he was among those invited to engage with the governor’s commissioners.
“I was here at the beginning of his government and I thank him for his exceptional love and faithful service to the people,” Obi added.
Reiterating his earlier remarks, Obi said responsible use of public funds was key to national development, citing Oyo State as an example of good governance.
“Nigeria is not poor; it is poorly governed. That is what Makinde is not doing here,” he said.
