MTN Telecommunications has commenced the disconnection of telephone lines not linked to National Identification Numbers (NIN), in compliance with a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). An MTN official from challenge, Ibadan branch, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development, emphasizing that the decision was not solely made by the company, but rather a response to the regulatory mandate.

The exercise aims to ensure that all telephone numbers are permanently registered and linked to NIN, in line with the NCC’s efforts to enhance national security and curb fraudulent activities. The official clarified that the disconnection is a temporary measure, and affected lines will be restored once the required linkage is established.
However, in a statement issued on Monday, Reuben Muoka, Director of Media and Public Affairs at the NCC, directed that all blocked telephone lines be unblocked, providing relief to affected subscribers.
To avoid future disruptions, the MTN official advised concerned individuals to visit any MTN office at their convenience to link their telephone lines to their NIN.
This development underscores the importance of complying with regulatory requirements and the need for telecommunication companies to prioritize national security and customer verification.
