The Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Ibrahim Uthman, has said there is no justification for any Muslim to go against the authority of the Sultan.
He noted that matters relating to the declaration of Ramadan and Eid remain the responsibility of the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, and urged Muslims to respect his authority.
In his Eid sermon, he reflected on the Ramadan period, describing the initial challenges faced by Muslims as a test from Allah, stressing that no one is burdened beyond their capacity. He urged the faithful to sustain the discipline and acts of worship observed during the holy month.
Prof. Uthman explained that while Islam encourages obedience to leaders, it also allows Muslims to speak against injustice through peaceful and lawful means, including dialogue and non-violent protests.
He added that not everyone can be in a position of leadership, emphasising the need for fairness, balance and justice in society.
The Imam commended the Sultan for promoting unity among Muslims in Nigeria, noting that his consistent engagement with different groups over the years has strengthened cohesion within the Muslim community.
He said the Sultan’s intervention in the moon-sighting process, through the establishment of a committee, has helped ensure that the practice follows the Sunnah and remains hitch-free.
Prof. Uthman also urged the government to address concerns over the reported banning of Islamic Studies in some schools in Oyo State, calling for inclusivity and the protection of students’ rights to practice their religion.
He encouraged Muslims to continue to appreciate the role of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), noting that his message remains central to Islam.
The cleric concluded by reminding Muslims that while Islam permits celebration and happiness, such expressions must be in line with the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
