Ambassador Taofeek Oladejo Arapaja, the factional National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State.
In a formal declaration made public, Arapaja presented himself as a candidate of continuity and experience, positioning his ambition as a bridge between the achievements of the current administration and the future development of the state.
He emphasized the need to sustain and expand the “Omituntun” agenda of Governor Seyi Makinde, noting that the progress recorded in infrastructure, healthcare, and education must not be disrupted.
According to him, Oyo State requires steady and experienced leadership rather than what he described as a “political experiment” at a critical stage of its development.
“Oyo State does not need a newcomer. We need a steady, experienced hand to ensure that the progress started by Governor Makinde is not only sustained but accelerated,” Arapaja stated.
The PDP chieftain highlighted his extensive political experience spanning over three decades, which he said has equipped him with the capacity to lead effectively from day one.
His political journey includes serving as a two-term Chairman of Ibadan South-East Local Government, a member of the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007, and Deputy Governor of Oyo State under the late Adebayo Alao-Akala.
Arapaja also served Nigeria in the diplomatic corps as Ambassador to Iran and Jordan between 2012 and 2015, and currently holds the position of PDP National Secretary, having previously served as Deputy National Chairman (South).
He further stressed his connection with the grassroots, describing himself as a leader who understands the needs of artisans, market women, and young people across the state.
Framing his ambition around unity and stability within the party, Arapaja called on PDP members to prioritise experience and cohesion as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
He noted that his leadership style would be inclusive and people-oriented, promising to remain accessible and responsive to the concerns of citizens.
With his declaration, political observers say the race for the PDP ticket in Oyo State is beginning to take shape, with Arapaja’s entry expected to intensify competition ahead of the party’s primaries.
