Hon. Akin Alabi, the Chairman of the House Committee on Works and Member representing Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has been officially announced as the Jagun Olubadan of Ibadanland, signifying his formal entry into the revered Ibadan chieftaincy line.
The announcement was made on Monday, May 19, 2025, through a formal letter issued by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, at the Olubadan Palace. The coronation ceremony is scheduled to hold on Friday, May 23, 2025, in accordance with the established customs and traditions of the ancient city.
The Ibadan chieftaincy system is widely regarded as one of the most structured and respected traditional institutions in Yorubaland. It is renowned for its 23-step hierarchical progression, beginning with the title of Jagun and culminating in the esteemed position of Olubadan. The conferment of the title of Jagun Olubadan is, therefore, a significant milestone that carries both historical and cultural importance.
In his reaction to the announcement, Hon. Alabi expressed deep appreciation and a sense of responsibility. He noted that the recognition is not only a personal honour but also a source of pride for the people of Ibadan.
“This is not just a personal milestone, it’s is a proud moment for all ibadan indigenes. I recognize the gravity of this step, and I am committed to upholding the values and heritage it represents,” he stated .
The conferment of this title is seen as a reflection of Hon. Alabi’s continued commitment to public service at the federal level and his enduring dedication to the cultural legacy of Ibadanland. His elevation is expected to inspire other indigenes to contribute to both political leadership and traditional institution building.
