World AIDS Day – APIN Holds Empowering Street Rally in Ibadan

On Friday December 1, 2023,  World AIDS Day, the streets of Bodija, Ibadan, witnessed a vibrant and empowering rally organized by APIN Public Health Initiatives. The event aimed to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote HIV/AIDS prevention and testing in the community. With a commitment to public health, APIN brought together.

One of the highlights of the event was the availability of free testing units. APIN’s commitment to accessibility was evident as these units offered free and confidential HIV testing to anyone interested. The convenience and confidentiality of on-the-spot testing encouraged a significant number of attendees to participate, contributing to APIN’s broader goal of increasing the community’s awareness of their HIV status. The units were designated in Adeoyo Maternity Centre, Yemetu, Comfort Medical Centre, Agodi Gate and Idi Ogungun PHC, also in Agodi Gate, amongst others.

In addition, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) — a medication that stops HIV from taking hold and spreading throughout the body — was promised to people who are HIV-negative after testing.

Mrs Bola Thompson, the Gender Lead for APIN Ibadan, also doubling as the Prevention and Community Regional Lead, while speaking to our reporter stated that the programme kick-started on the 25th of November, and would span over 16 days till the 10th of December.

“This is the first week, and we are having series of activities like this one. You will see that there are people that are wearing shirts with a “NO” inscription on them. Basically we are spreading awareness.

“There are going to be school visits, because we are targeting young people to educate them, to bring important messages to them, to ensure that they are safe from all these vices.”

Mrs Thompson further added that the programme was a Non-Governmental volunteering service for the good of the community.

The rally also saw passionate speeches from healthcare professionals and participants, sharing tips, dispelling myths, and emphasizing the importance of de-stigmatizing the virus. Additionally, there were speeches about HIV prevention strategies, treatment options, and the significance of early detection, and educational insights about rape and its consequences.

HIV preventive materials were also gifted to interested passers-by.

To ensure widespread participation, entertainment elements were incorporated into the rally. Street performances, music, and interactive activities helped engage the community, making the event not only informative but also enjoyable. This approach successfully attracted people of all ages and backgrounds, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere.

The event exemplified the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing public health issues and demonstrated how a community-led approach can create lasting positive impacts.
