The Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources in Oyo State, Hon. Mojeed Mogbonjubola, has revealed substantial improvements in the ministry’s waste management efforts over the past year. Speaking during an interview on Fresh FM, the commissioner highlighted the strides made in reducing waste levels and enhancing cleanliness across Ibadan and the state at large.
According to Mogbonjubola, the state has engaged 14 waste management consultants, with each local government area (LGA) in Ibadan now having its own dedicated consultant to oversee waste disposal efforts. This initiative, he said, has significantly contributed to the ministry’s progress in managing and reducing waste.
The commissioner reported an impressive reduction in waste collection costs, citing a nearly 60-70% decrease in waste levels. “Last year, we were spending approximately 40 million naira monthly on waste collection. Today, that figure has dropped to around 6 million naira monthly,” Mogbonjubola disclosed. He attributed this drastic cutback to improved compliance from residents and more efficient waste management strategies.
He extended his gratitude to the people of Ibadan for cooperating with the ministry’s initiatives to maintain a cleaner city. He also acknowledged the support of Governor Seyi Makinde, whose administration has provided essential resources to enhance the ministry’s operations.
Looking ahead, the commissioner emphasized the ministry’s focus on market areas, stating that these locations will receive special attention to ensure they maintain high standards of cleanliness. “All market areas will be treated with peculiarity to ensure clean environments,” he affirmed during the radio interview.
This announcement marks a significant milestone in Oyo State’s ongoing efforts to improve public health and environmental sustainability through effective waste management strategies.
