The Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan on Wednesday recorded a historic milestone as it welcomed its first aircraft since the facility was shut down in March 2025 for an extensive upgrade to international standards.
The aircraft, an advance member of the presidential fleet, touched down at exactly 9:14 a.m., drawing cheers from airport staff, aviation officials, and residents who had gathered to witness the landmark moment.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to visit Ibadan on Friday, September 26, for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. Wednesday’s successful landing is seen as a key indicator of the airport’s readiness to handle high-profile flights ahead of the high-level ceremony.
State officials described the smooth operation as a demonstration of the airport’s upgraded infrastructure and enhanced safety measures. “This inaugural flight since March underscores the facility’s capacity to accommodate both local and international operations,” an aviation source said.
The airport’s transformation began after Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade in September 2024. At the time, the governor said the project would “connect the state to the global market” and strengthen its position as a hub for economic growth and development.
Makinde also highlighted the economic potential of the new facility, noting that the improvements would enhance air travel operations and provide a more reliable transportation network for business and leisure travelers alike.
Key components of the upgrade include a renovated VIP lounge, a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility, and the provision of a modern fire truck to boost safety compliance.
With the presidential flight expected to land in the coming days, the successful test flight signals the official reopening of the Ladoke Akintola Airport and sets a positive precedent for future arrivals and departures in Oyo State.
