University of Ibadan, the Premier University of Nigeria, has just finished her 2023 Convocation Ceremony, held between 14th – 17th November at the International Conference Center, on the campus premises. In the heart of the ceremony, a different kind of challenge unfolded – a silent struggle faced by undergraduate students in pursuit of the elusive treasure: free item 7.
As the ceremony buzzes with academic achievements and a celebratory mood, the hunger pangs of students seeking free Foods created a unique subplot.
For these undergraduates, the quest for complimentary meals was a tactical endeavor, combining determination and resourcefulness. They gathered in groups, shared tips on which corners of the campus offer the best chances of a free culinary delight. From the location of the event, International Conference Centre, down to the Chapel, across to the big turf in front of the UI Central Mosque, to Alumni Building and UI Hotels, every gathering was a potential lifeline for the budget-conscious students.
Amid the sea of ceremonial robes and expensive outfits, these undergraduates became participants in real-life Hunger Games, where wit and timing were the key weapons. They joined in praise-worships, clapping louder than the celebrants; they cheerfully congratulated graduands, as if they were long-term pals; and they followed processions, blending into the crowd, like they were invited guests.
Behind the seemingly light-hearted pursuit, however, lies a grim reflection of the financial challenges many students face. The high cost of education often leaves little room for them to eat satisfactorily, making free meals not just a luxury but a necessity for Students, especially, those struggling with tight budgets.
