President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, describing him as a distinguished monarch whose life was marked by intellect, service, and an unwavering commitment to cultural heritage.
In a condolence statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said he received the news of the monarch’s death with “deep shock.”
“Oba Owolabi Olakulehin was not only a custodian of Ibadan’s rich history and traditions but also a man of intellect and principle whose influence transcended the palace walls, impacting education, governance, and national progress,” Tinubu stated.
The President hailed the late Olubadan as a highly accomplished man of peace, a dedicated public servant, and a royal father whose life exemplified the highest standards of leadership, learning, and service. According to him, Oba Olakulehin’s wisdom and moral authority served as a stabilizing force in Ibadanland and across the Yoruba nation.
Reflecting on a recent personal interaction, Tinubu revealed, “Just last week, I received an invitation from the late Olubadan to his 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary celebrations. Shockingly, his death came just days before the celebration.”
The President further remarked that Oba Olakulehin would be remembered for upholding the honour and dignity of the Olubadan stool and for his ability to bridge tradition with modernity.
President Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of the monarch’s soul and urged the people of Ibadan to find comfort in the exemplary life and values their late king represented.
