The Nigeria Police Force, Oyo State Command, has reassured residents of comprehensive security arrangements ahead of the local government elections scheduled for December 29, 2026. The assurance covers safety measures before, during, and after the polls, aimed at ensuring a peaceful electoral process across the state.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Olugbenga, gave the assurance while receiving the leadership of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission during a courtesy visit at the command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, on Monday.
Speaking during the meeting, the police chief emphasized that maintaining peace is critical to delivering free, fair, and credible elections. He noted that the command is fully prepared to safeguard lives and property, adding that security agencies will work collaboratively to ensure the success of the exercise.
Olugbenga further assured the electoral body of the command’s full support, stressing that previous successes in election security would be sustained. He added that the police would strengthen coordination with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the process meets acceptable democratic standards.
Earlier, the Chairman of OYSIEC, Afees Adeniyi, said the visit was to formally notify the police of the commission’s readiness to conduct a peaceful and intimidation-free election. He highlighted recurring concerns among residents regarding safety during elections, calling for enhanced cooperation with security agencies.
Adeniyi also urged the police to intensify efforts in maintaining law and order across polling units and to prevent any form of violence. While commending the command for its support during previous elections, he expressed confidence that continued collaboration would ensure a smooth and credible electoral process in the state.
