Veteran journalist, renowned author and public relations practitioner, Oloye Lekan Alabi, has died at the age of 75.
Alabi, who held the traditional title of Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, reportedly passed away on Saturday morning in Lagos.
His death was confirmed in a statement issued by the Media Aide to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Adeola Oloko.
Widely respected in journalism, public relations and cultural circles, Alabi was celebrated for his immense contributions to the media profession, historical documentation and the promotion of Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage. Over the decades, he authored several books and remained an influential voice in public affairs, earning widespread recognition for his commitment to preserving the history and traditions of Ibadanland.
Born on October 27, 1950, Oloye Alabi built an illustrious career that spanned journalism, broadcasting, public relations and public service. He began his journalism career with the defunct Sketch newspaper before joining the Western Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (WNBC), which later became the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Ibadan.
He subsequently joined Odu’a Investment Company Limited as Public Relations Manager and later rose to become the company’s Corporate Affairs Manager, a position he held for many years.
Throughout his distinguished career, Oloye Alabi had the rare privilege of serving as Chief Press Secretary to four governors of the old Oyo State, where he played a significant role in government communication and public information management. His contributions to journalism, public relations and governance earned him widespread respect within and beyond Oyo State.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alabi was a respected Ibadan historian, cultural ambassador and traditional title holder whose writings and public engagements helped preserve the city’s heritage for future generations.
According to family sources, the late journalist will be buried on Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites.
His passing marks the end of an era for the Nigerian media industry and the people of Ibadanland, where he was widely admired for his intellectual depth, professionalism and unwavering dedication to promoting the history, culture and development of the ancient city.
