The Oyo State Government has ordered roadside traders and those operating from container shops along Airport Road, Old Ife Road, and Onipepeye areas of Ibadan to vacate their trading spots within two weeks.
According to the directive, the ultimatum, set to expire on Monday, October 27, 2025, is part of the state’s renewed effort to curb roadside trading, ensure environmental safety, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the capital city.
In a statement, the government explained that despite providing several designated markets and secure trading environments across Ibadan, many traders still engage in roadside selling and mount container shops on drainages and walkways.
The government warned that such practices expose traders to life-threatening dangers and environmental hazards, stressing that, as a responsible administration, it has a duty to protect citizens from preventable risks.
It further noted that trading on walkways not only damages public infrastructure but also obstructs drainage systems, heightening the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
“The presence of roadside traders along major roads also undermines the state’s investment in tourism,” the statement added, emphasizing that the unsightly view created by roadside markets could discourage visitors and investors.
The government therefore urged all affected traders to comply with the directive within the stipulated period, cautioning that failure to do so would attract strict enforcement of existing laws. Sanctions, it warned, could include confiscation of goods and possible prosecution of offenders.
Reiterating its commitment to sustainable urban development, the Oyo State Government called for the cooperation of residents, community leaders, and traders in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized environment conducive for business and tourism growth.
