The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to give urgent attention to the state’s education sector, expressing concern over what it described as the deteriorating condition of public schools and the welfare of teachers across the state.
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olawale Sadare, the opposition party alleged that many government-owned primary and secondary schools are operating under difficult conditions, with inadequate learning facilities and infrastructure that require immediate intervention. It argued that improving the quality of education should remain a top priority given its importance to the state’s social and economic development.
According to the APC, several public schools reportedly have dilapidated classroom blocks and learning environments that are no longer conducive for effective teaching and learning. The party also raised concerns about the welfare of teachers, alleging that deductions from salaries and allowances have placed additional pressure on education personnel.
The party maintained that while the state has continued to receive substantial allocations and intervention funds, residents expect greater investment in critical sectors such as education. It urged the government to channel more resources towards the renovation of school infrastructure, provision of modern teaching and learning materials, and the implementation of policies that would improve the welfare and productivity of teachers.
The APC further stressed that strengthening public education would enhance learning outcomes, reduce pressure on parents who cannot afford private schools, and provide pupils with a safer and more conducive environment for academic development. It also called for sustained monitoring of education projects to ensure that interventions translate into measurable improvements across schools in the state.
The call comes amid growing national conversations on improving the quality of basic and secondary education through increased investment in infrastructure, teacher development and effective utilisation of education intervention funds. Education observers note that continuous investment in public schools remains essential to achieving better learning outcomes and expanding access to quality education for every child.
