Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that his ultimate legacy should not rest on physical infrastructure but on the enduring institutions his administration is building to foster good governance.
Speaking on Monday at the official flag-off of the 2025 Oyo State International Trade Fair, EXPOYO 2025, Makinde made this known while delivering a keynote address at a two-day mid-term leadership retreat themed “Reflecting on Progress, Refining Priorities and Redefining for Maximum Impact and Legacy.”
The retreat, held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, focused on creating a strategic development roadmap for the state from 2023 to 2027.
“Great vision demands deliberate coordination,” Makinde said. “I don’t want to be remembered for constructing roads. I want to be remembered for the institutions we have built—structures that will sustain good governance long after we are gone.”
The governor emphasized the need for unity and collaboration among government officials and stakeholders, stressing that collective efforts are crucial to delivering quality governance that will endure beyond his administration.
“Let us cooperate and coordinate ourselves to deliver good governance to our people. Together, we can build a legacy that will stand the test of time,” he said.
Makinde also addressed speculations about a possible cabinet shake-up, reassuring his team that while some members may pursue other political ambitions, his administration remains committed to supporting them.
“Some may not finish with us because of their political ambitions, but you have my support in your future endeavours,” he added, charging all cabinet members and political appointees to focus on leaving a positive and lasting impact.
