The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has announced Tuesday, December 29, 2026, as the new date for the conduct of local government council elections across the state.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Chairman of OYSIEC, Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, who explained that the adjustment followed a recent revision of the national electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to the statement, INEC moved the Presidential and National Assembly elections from February 20, 2027, to January 16, 2027 — a date that had earlier been scheduled by OYSIEC for the local government elections in Oyo State.
Dr. Adeniyi said the overlap created operational and logistical concerns that made a review of the state election timetable necessary.
“This decision became necessary following the recent revision of the national electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which moved the Presidential and National Assembly elections from 20 February 2027 to 16 January 2027 — a date previously scheduled by OYSIEC for the conduct of Local Government Elections in Oyo State — thereby creating an operational and logistical overlap,” he stated.
He explained that the commission resolved to move the election date to December 29, 2026, after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
According to him, the adjustment is aimed at preventing operational congestion, ensuring optimal security deployment, protecting voter participation, maintaining administrative clarity, and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
Dr. Adeniyi also disclosed that political parties are expected to conclude their electioneering campaigns by midnight on Monday, December 28, 2026.
He further stated that a rerun election will be conducted on Tuesday, January 5, 2027, if necessary.
The OYSIEC chairman urged political parties and other stakeholders to continue their preparations in line with the revised timetable.
He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a peaceful, transparent, credible, and inclusive local government election across Oyo State.
