FAAC Funds, Bodija Roads and Public Anger: Citizens Question Oyo Government Over Ibadan North Allocations

Fresh controversy has erupted around the use of federal allocations in Oyo State following a detailed social media post questioning how funds received by Ibadan North Local Government Area and the Oyo State Government were spent, particularly in relation to the repair of Old and New Bodija roads after the Ibadan explosion. The post has triggered widespread outrage, suspicion, and renewed calls for transparency in public finance management.

The debate was sparked by Taiwo Ajakaye (@dmightyangel), who laid out a series of figures drawn from FAAC allocations. According to him, Ibadan North LGA received ₦742.8 million in September 2025, while Oyo State got about ₦20 billion from the Federation Account in the same period. He noted that Bodija falls under Ibadan North, raising questions about how these funds were deployed.

Ajakaye further provided a breakdown of allocations in preceding months, stating that Ibadan North received ₦735,432,662.93 in August and ₦684,574,469.21 in July. “Ibadan North has been getting an average of ₦500 million monthly,” he wrote, emphasizing that the local government had substantial funds at its disposal even before additional federal interventions.

The central question raised in the post focused on the controversial Bodija road repairs. Ajakaye asked whether the ₦5.6 billion approved for Old and New Bodija roads, as cited by Prof. Snagodoyin, came from the ₦30 billion allegedly received from the Federal Government for the explosion, from Ibadan North LGA funds, or from the Oyo State 2025 budget.

“So let me ask you again before you guys rope yourselves in more,” he wrote pointedly, suggesting that inconsistencies in official explanations could deepen public distrust if not addressed clearly and promptly.

The post quickly attracted strong reactions, many of them sharply critical of the Oyo State Government. Ekundayo Ayo (@ayo13_ekundayo) accused authorities of financial misconduct, writing bluntly, “Authority Stealing!!!!!!” His comment reflected a broader sentiment of anger rather than cautious inquiry.

Stephen Oyewole (@oye_niran) took a mocking tone, saying, “Amazingly, the governor ‘blew off the lid’ on himself,” implying that official statements may have unintentionally exposed contradictions in the government’s narrative.

Others were far more direct in their accusations. simplyIsmail (@simpliismail) declared, “Seyi Makinde is a thief!” while Olugbemiga (@GbemigaOgunwale) echoed similar anger, writing in Yoruba, “Awon ole in government House,” translating to “Thieves in Government House.”

Several commenters expressed frustration over what they described as silence from the authorities. Bongolobango (@DADONSKAPACHE) wrote, “They will not come and speak oo,” suggesting that the absence of an official clarification was fueling speculation and resentment.

Tosin Balogun (@tosi_tosin) warned that accountability would eventually catch up with the governor, saying, “Makinde cannot escape after his tenure.” Babafemi (@babao77) added sarcastically, “Sheyi go explain explain tire,” implying that repeated explanations may no longer convince the public.

Some reactions broadened the issue beyond Oyo State. Ajiboye Oluwaseun (@sammyniran2008) argued that governors across Nigeria deserve more scrutiny, stating, “Nigeria governors are causing more havoc to people even more than the president but unfortunately the focus is more on the FG.”

That sentiment was reinforced by Fathi-Yinde (@fathiyinde4035), who wrote, “Naija governors are wicked,” reflecting a growing perception that state-level governance often escapes accountability compared to federal authorities.

Others tagged the governor directly in their frustration. Palace (@aremsbee) wrote, “@seyiamakinde don buy market!! All the same: thieves!!” blending sarcasm with outright condemnation.

Not all responses aligned with the accusations. Shollz Asaaju (@ShollzAsaaju) pushed back against the narrative, telling critics, “Ur brain is upside down my brother,” suggesting that the allegations were either exaggerated or poorly reasoned.

One of the most detailed accusations came from Johnny Mark Ray (@JohnMAtoyebi1), who alleged long-term financial misconduct. “SEYI MAKINDE HAS BEEN STEALING OYO MONEY STEADILY,” he wrote, referencing the governor’s asset declaration before assuming office and claiming that the figures were never properly verified.

He added that accountability may yet come through anti-corruption agencies, saying, “EFCC has assured us that that’s not the end; you have to correlate figures,” a remark that reflects lingering public hope in institutional oversight.

As of now, there has been no comprehensive official response directly addressing the specific questions raised about FAAC allocations, the ₦30 billion federal intervention, and the ₦5.6 billion Bodija road repairs. The silence has allowed anger and speculation to dominate the conversation.

What this episode underscores is a deepening crisis of trust between citizens and state governments. In an era where allocation figures are publicly accessible, Nigerians are increasingly demanding not just numbers, but clear, consistent explanations of how public funds are spent.

Until detailed clarifications are provided, the questions raised about Ibadan North’s allocations and the Bodija road projects will continue to resonate online, serving as another reminder that transparency is no longer optional; it is demanded, scrutinized, and fiercely debated in the court of public opinion.
