Fayose vs Makinde: The Wild, Funny, and Counter Tweets From Nigerians Online

The simmering political tension between former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has taken a new turn, spilling forcefully onto social media after comments credited to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reignited debates about loyalty, ambition, and power within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The spark came from remarks attributed to Wike during a media interaction, where he reacted sharply to claims allegedly made by Governor Makinde. According to a question posed to Wike and widely circulated online, “Seyi Makinde said you held meetings with President Tinubu together, and you told him you hold PDP for him. Is that factual?” Wike’s response was swift and dismissive.

“That is a blatant lie,” Wike said. “Seyi Makinde has never called me Wike. That is the first time I have heard him calling me Wike. It’s unfortunate. He doesn’t even have the guts to tell us he is running for president.” The comment instantly set social media ablaze, framing the ongoing Fayose–Makinde controversy within a wider power struggle inside the PDP.

Online reactions were immediate and diverse, with many Nigerians questioning whether personal rivalries among political elites offer any real path forward for the country. Annie M. (@AnnieMoses01) asked pointedly, “Is this the way forward for Nigeria??” a sentiment echoed by several users frustrated by what they see as endless political infighting.

Others viewed the unfolding drama as an implosion within the opposition party. OVP STORY (@Ov_Philip) summed it up bluntly: “Them don dey fight them self,” a comment that resonated with citizens who believe the PDP’s internal battles are weakening its credibility.

Some commentators took aim at the logic behind the confrontation itself. Blackmantha (@Blackmantha710) questioned why a sitting governor would be entangled in disputes over federal appointments. “Lol, he is a current governor. How is his problem a ministerial slot. Your principal isn’t even sure he’ll come back,” the user wrote, in an apparent jab at Fayose’s alignment and political calculations.

For others, the dispute reflected bitterness rather than principle. g1oss (@Tom_Christmas_) described the exchange as “a classic case of sour grapes,” advising politicians to “focus on actual governance instead,” instead of public quarrels that yield no tangible benefits for citizens.

Bion (@kryptobiony) adopted an even harsher tone, suggesting that political failure, not injustice, lay at the root of the complaints. “Maybe he should have tried harder at the political game instead of whining,” the user tweeted, reinforcing perceptions that some actors are struggling to stay relevant.

Confusion also featured prominently in the reactions. Obisense ✨ (@spanishmic) captured the mood of many observers with a simple but telling question: “Okay so what now?” reflecting public uncertainty about where the accusations and counter-accusations ultimately lead.

The personality of Wike himself did not escape scrutiny. A parody account, (parody)Gabby (@imobiho_ga8906), joked, “This Wike is becoming something else oo,” highlighting how the minister’s combative style continues to divide opinion even among politically engaged Nigerians.

At the heart of many reactions was a strong undercurrent of class and power resentment. Lala-xclusive (@xclusivelala24) wrote in pidgin, “Person wey dey governor go dey fight ministerial slot he know dey hungry like una wey don sell ur soul for money,” accusing political actors of being driven more by personal gain than public service.

Although Fayose was not directly quoted in this latest exchange, many users interpreted Wike’s comments as indirectly validating earlier accusations that Fayose’s attacks on Makinde were motivated by proximity to power and access to patronage rather than principle.

Supporters of Makinde, on the other hand, argue that the Oyo governor has become a target precisely because of his growing national profile. To them, Wike’s remark that Makinde “doesn’t even have the guts” to declare presidential ambition was less a factual observation and more a political provocation.

The debate also reopened old wounds within the PDP, particularly around accusations of betrayal during the 2023 elections and ongoing disagreements over the party’s future direction. Many commentators see the Fayose–Makinde dispute as a symptom of unresolved leadership struggles.

Beyond party politics, citizens expressed disappointment that pressing national issues such as inflation, insecurity, and unemployment were being overshadowed by elite quarrels. Several users questioned whether these public spats offered any solutions to Nigeria’s real problems.

Yet, for some, the online exchanges serve as a rare window into the raw power dynamics shaping Nigerian politics. The unfiltered comments, sarcasm, and anger reveal a politically aware but deeply skeptical citizenry.

As the tweets continue to circulate, neither Fayose nor Makinde has directly addressed Wike’s latest remarks, leaving room for speculation and further commentary. What remains clear is that the court of public opinion has become as influential as any press conference or party meeting.

Ultimately, the Fayose versus Makinde saga, now amplified by Wike’s intervention, underscores a troubling reality: Nigeria’s political battles are increasingly fought on social media, where perception often outweighs policy, and where citizens watch, comment, and judge sometimes with humor, often with frustration, but always with growing impatience.
