Democracy Day: President Tinubu Vows to Protect Democracy and Reform Economy.

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and addressing the nation’s economic challenges.

President Tinubu made this affirmation during his Democracy Day address to the nation, commemorating 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria.

Emphasizing the importance of democracy, President Tinubu stated, “As Nigerians, we must remind ourselves that no matter how complicated democracy may be, it is the best form of governance in the long run.”

Reflecting on the sacrifices made for Nigeria’s democracy, the President honored those who laid down their lives for the nation, stating that, “We pay eternal honour to those who sacrificed everything to pave the way for our democracy.”

President Tinubu, who played a significant role in the nation’s transition to democracy, expressed his gratitude for leading Nigeria at this critical juncture. “I stand uniquely placed in this regard. I was among those who took the risk to midwife the birth of our democracy,” he said.

He assured the nation of his dedication to preserving democratic governance, promising to do “whatever is necessary to cement democracy as our way of life.”

Addressing the nation’s economic challenges, President Tinubu acknowledged the need for urgent reforms. He emphasized that the ongoing economic reforms, though painful, are essential for creating a stronger foundation for future growth.

President Tinubu further revealed that his administration has been negotiating with organized labour on a new national minimum wage. He confirmed that an executive bill would soon be sent to the National Assembly to formalize the agreed-upon wage as part of Nigeria’s law for the next five years or less.

He also highlighted the government’s cooperative approach in addressing labour issues, opting for “cooperation over conflict” in response to calls for a national strike.

President Tinubu urged Nigerians to “keep the fire of democracy burning” and to remain committed to the nation’s democratic ideals.
