The Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation (SSACO) has urged Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to halt any planned sale or allocation of the Cheshire Home land in Eleyele, Ibadan, to private property developers.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Bisi Oladele, the organisation said the reported plan raised concerns about the protection of public assets and the availability of land for future public services.
SSACO argued that property held for public benefit should not be transferred to private commercial interests without transparency and clear justification.
The group said controversies surrounding the ownership, allocation and commercial use of government properties had raised questions about the administration’s management of the state’s resources. It described the Cheshire Home dispute as a further cause for concern.
According to the organisation, the governor holds public assets in trust for the people and must manage them in the interests of both current residents and future generations.
It maintained that properties acquired or preserved by successive administrations should be protected against decisions that could undermine their long-term public value.
SSACO warned that disposing of strategically located public land could limit the state’s capacity to provide infrastructure and social amenities as its population grows.
The organisation questioned the justification for allocating such properties to developers when land would still be needed for schools, hospitals, recreation centres, social welfare institutions and other public facilities.
It also asked what provision would remain for future generations if prime public properties continued to be converted into private estates, shopping complexes and other commercial developments.
The campaign group called on the Makinde administration to preserve the state’s land assets and ensure that decisions concerning their use reflect long-term development needs.
It demanded an immediate halt to any planned transaction involving the Cheshire Home land and called for transparency and accountability in all dealings involving public property.
The statement did not include the state government’s response to SSACO’s demands.
