Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has expressed deep concern over the deplorable condition of the Ibadan-Gbongan federal road, describing it as a “death trap” that poses a significant threat to road users. Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, made this statement while speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Osogbo, highlighting the urgent need for federal intervention to repair the road.
The Ibadan-Gbongan road, which connects Oyo, Osun, and Ondo states, has become increasingly hazardous, with deep potholes and deteriorating infrastructure making it almost impassable for motorists. Oyintiloye warned that continued neglect of the road would lead to higher risks, especially during the festive period when traffic volume is expected to increase.
Oyintiloye appealed to the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently find a solution to the road’s problems, emphasizing that every part of the road is almost impassable and causing untold hardship for motorists. He noted that the dual carriageway has been reduced to a single lane due to the terrible condition of the road, which is not suitable for safe travel.
The APC chieftain commended the federal government on its Renewed Hope infrastructure development across the country but stressed that urgent intervention is needed on the Ibadan-Gbongan road to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerians using it. He emphasized that a good road network is essential for sustaining economic growth, creating jobs, and improving the quality of life of citizens.
Oyintiloye also highlighted the economic strain caused by the deteriorating condition of many roads across the country, noting that the situation leads to the loss of billions of Naira annually in lost productivity and resources. He warned that the poor state of the road network has claimed countless lives in preventable accidents and exposed travelers to dangers of insecurity.
Furthermore, Oyintiloye stated that despite substantial yearly budgets dedicated to road construction and maintenance, Nigeria continues to face a persistent gap in the quality and quantity of its road infrastructure. He urged the federal government to fast-track the rehabilitation and reconstruction of all roads that need urgent attention, especially as the festive period approaches.
In conclusion, Oyintiloye’s appeal to the federal government to fix the Ibadan-Gbongan road is a call to action to address the country’s infrastructure challenges and ensure the safety of road users.
