The Agunloye royal family from Isale Oja, Oyo, has firmly reiterated its position that the selection of the next Alaafin of Oyo should strictly follow the traditional Ifa oracle divination process.
This declaration comes in response to claims that some factions are attempting to bypass established customs and sway Governor Seyi Makinde into endorsing what they term as illegal practices.
Prince Siyanbola Tella, representing the Agunloye family, emphasized the importance of adhering to traditional procedures.
He criticized the ongoing attempts by certain interests to disrupt the selection process, which he argued undermines the integrity of Oyo’s time-honored traditions.
Tella pointed out that the Oyo kingmakers, or Oyo Mesi, are aware of the correct procedures for selecting a new Alaafin and should proceed without further delay.
Tella recounted that on September 3, 2023, the Bashorun, head of the Oyo Mesi, convened a gathering of princes, family heads, and key personalities at the Alaafin palace.
During this meeting, it was unanimously agreed that Ifa divination should be used to select the new Alaafin, as reflected by the raised hands of all present.
The Agunloye family condemned attempts to coerce Governor Makinde into accepting what they view as an illegitimate selection process, urging him to uphold traditional methods.
They underscored that the Ifa divination process is crucial for ensuring transparency and alignment with the spiritual and cultural values of the Oyo kingdom.
Despite recent speculations and legal disputes that have stalled the selection process, the Agunloye family and other community leaders remain resolute in their support for the Ifa oracle’s role in selecting the new ruler.
They call on Governor Makinde to act decisively to end delays and preserve the integrity of the traditional succession process.
