The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two staff members of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) over the alleged assault of a lecturer at the University of Ibadan.
The victim, Dr. Mikail Abdulsalam, a lecturer in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Ibadan, was reportedly attacked at the Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station in Moniya, Ibadan.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the suspects were arrested on Wednesday by officers attached to the Moniya Police Division.
According to the police spokesperson, the arrests followed a report made to the division after the lecturer was allegedly beaten by the railway workers during an altercation at the station.
Sources familiar with the incident disclosed that the situation occurred when Dr. Abdulsalam drove to the railway station to drop off his sister, who was scheduled to travel to Lagos by train.
The lecturer had reportedly parked his vehicle briefly to allow his sister disembark when the railway workers confronted him. Despite his calm response, the staff allegedly subjected him to harassment before physically assaulting him.
Following the incident, the matter was reported to the Moniya Police Division, prompting swift intervention by officers who subsequently apprehended the two suspects.
The police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
