“Listen to the Cries of Nigerians” Gov Makinde Blasts FG. Over Welfare Failures in Bold New Year Message

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State did not mince words in his 2026 New Year broadcast, delivering what many are calling his most direct challenge to the Federal Government yet. Speaking from the State House on Thursday morning, January 1, 2026, the Governor lamented the deepening economic hardship across the country, urging the central government to “listen to the cries of Nigerians” and adopt more inclusive welfare strategies.

The Governor’s address, which was monitored by the Ibadan City Announcer, highlighted the stark reality of the past twelve months. Makinde noted that while his administration in Oyo State has worked tirelessly to pull residents out of poverty through targeted infrastructure and agricultural expansion, the “crushing weight” of national inflation and fuel price hikes has continued to erode the spending power of the average citizen.

Economic Challenges: “Hearts are Heavy”

Governor Makinde’s tone was empathetic but firm as he reviewed the events of 2025. “Throughout the year, we struggled with economic challenges as a nation,” he stated. “Inflation rates have reduced our spending power and dragged more people into poverty than we were able to help escape. Our hearts are heavy because we see the struggle in every household.”

He emphasized that the current federal economic policies are hitting the most vulnerable Nigerians the hardest. Makinde called for a shift from “reactive” governance to a “proactive and inclusive” model that prioritizes human capital over abstract economic figures. He argued that for the “Renewed Hope” agenda to be meaningful, it must be felt on the dining tables of the masses in places like Ibadan, Ogbomoso, and beyond.

Oyo State: A Model of Resilience

Despite the national gloom, Makinde used the broadcast to reaffirm his commitment to making Oyo State a “safe harbor” for investors and residents. He pointed to the 2026 Budget of Economic Expansion, which he signed just days ago, as the roadmap for the year. The budget focuses on completing key infrastructure like the Alakia Airport upgrade and the Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road to stimulate local trade.

Proactive Measures: The Governor announced that state agencies like OYMASED have been mandated to intensify sensitization on civic duties to prevent avoidable disasters.

Infrastructure as Architecture: He noted that the state’s focus is no longer just on “political projects” but on “economic architecture” that supports mobility and food security.

A Call for True Federalism

Continuing his push for regional autonomy, the Governor reiterated that the only way to ensure equal treatment for all citizens is through True Federalism. He urged Nigerians to stop being “bystanders” in the political process and to demand a system where every region can thrive based on its own unique resources and strengths.

“It will be a great gift to this generation if we make up our minds to participate and make our voices heard,” Makinde added. He urged the people of Oyo State to remain united and lawful, guarding the progress the state has made against those who wish to use “cheap political points” to divide the populace.

Unity for 2026 and Beyond

As the 2027 election cycle begins to appear on the horizon, Makinde’s message served as both a report card and a rallying cry. He reminded residents that “government alone cannot build the future we desire,” calling for continued cooperation and civic responsibility.

The Governor concluded with a message of hope, stating that while the state was “hard-pressed on every side” in 2025, it was not crushed. “Because we were not crushed, we can rise with confidence this 2026,” he declared, wishing all residents a prosperous and turnaround year
