The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the promotion and preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage with the launch of a Cultural Anthem, as part of activities marking the 2026 World Egungun Festival. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Cultural Centre, Mokola, in Ibadan.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, described the festival as a globally recognized cultural asset that continues to project the richness of Yoruba traditions to an international audience. He noted that the annual celebration attracts tourists, researchers, and cultural lovers from across the world.
According to the Commissioner, this year’s festival will feature a wide array of activities, including the unveiling of the Cultural Anthem, exhibitions, symposiums, and community engagements aimed at deepening appreciation for Yoruba heritage. The anthem, he added, was developed through collaborative efforts involving cultural stakeholders and the Oyo State Cultural Troupe.
Olatubosun further revealed that over 150 Egungun from within Nigeria and the diaspora are expected to participate, alongside more than 120 cultural groups.. He also highlighted growing international interest in the festival, noting that the Brazilian Ministry of Culture has expressed willingness to collaborate, while the British High Commission is expected to deliver a goodwill message.
The festival will commence with a symposium on May 1, 2026, at the Local Government Hall, Secretariat, Agodi, and conclude with a grand finale on May 2 at the Liberty Stadium. With an anticipated attendance of over 18,000 participants, the event is set to further position Oyo State as a leading hub for cultural tourism in Nigeria.
