Commuters and motorists along the Omi-Adio–Apata axis of Ibadan metropolis were stranded on Friday following the derailment of a cargo train at the Ibadan–Abeokuta railway crossing in Omi-Adio.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, led to severe traffic congestion as vehicular movement around the busy railway crossing was abruptly disrupted. The axis, known for its heavy daily traffic, quickly became gridlocked as motorists were forced to halt or seek alternative routes.
Commercial drivers, workers, and residents heading into the city endured long delays, with some spending several hours on the road. Many commuters reportedly abandoned their vehicles to trek considerable distances in order to keep appointments and resume daily activities.
Eyewitnesses said the cargo train derailed while approaching the crossing, veering off the track and blocking a major section of the roadway. The obstruction made it impossible for vehicles to pass through, bringing traffic to a complete standstill.
As the situation persisted, traffic built up rapidly and stretched for several kilometres along the Omi-Adio–Apata corridor. The congestion also spilled into adjoining roads, compounding the disruption and frustrating road users.
Despite the severity of the incident, no casualties were recorded. Residents and commuters expressed relief that no lives were lost, noting that the crossing is usually busy even in the early hours of the morning.
Officials of relevant security and transport agencies later arrived at the scene to manage the situation. Traffic personnel were deployed to control vehicle movement and maintain order while efforts were made to address the obstruction caused by the derailed train.
Their intervention gradually eased the congestion after several hours, allowing traffic to flow intermittently as authorities worked to restore normalcy around the crossing. By midday, movement along the axis had significantly improved.
The derailment has once again drawn attention to growing concerns over railway safety in Nigeria. In recent years, the country’s rail system has experienced multiple derailments and operational challenges, raising questions about infrastructure integrity and maintenance practices.
Transport analysts have repeatedly called for improved maintenance standards, routine inspections of rail tracks, and stricter enforcement of safety protocols to prevent recurring incidents of this nature.
Residents of Omi-Adio and surrounding communities urged the authorities to take lasting measures to address rail-related disruptions. They noted that beyond inconvenience, such incidents pose potential risks to lives and property, especially in densely populated urban areas.
Many commuters expressed hope that the latest incident would prompt urgent action from relevant agencies to strengthen railway safety and ensure that major transport corridors in Ibadan and beyond are protected from avoidable disruptions.
