Senator AbdulFatai Buhari, the three-term representative of Oyo North Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Land Transport, has formally announced his intention to contest the 2027 Oyo State governorship election under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The senator made the declaration on Saturday in Ibadan, marking a decisive shift in his political trajectory as he confirmed he would not be seeking a fourth term in the Senate. According to him, the governorship ambition is a step guided by faith and service rather than personal desperation.
“I have said it that I’m no longer interested in the Senate seat again because I also want to take a shot at the governorship,” he stated. “I am not desperate; I leave it to God, and I am looking unto God to do it for me.”
Buhari emphasized that the 2027 election presents an opportunity for Oyo citizens to redefine leadership selection by prioritizing merit over geopolitical considerations. He urged voters to focus on competence, track records, and leadership capacity instead of zoning sentiments.
“I want the people of Oyo State to look beyond where a candidate comes from and focus on performance, competence, experience, and the ability to take our state to greater heights,” he added.
Senator Buhari, widely regarded as one of the most experienced lawmakers from Oyo State, joins a growing list of APC chieftains eyeing the Agodi Government House ahead of the 2027 polls. His declaration is expected to reshape conversations within the party as political alignments and early permutations continue to build momentum.
