Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday commissioned the newly built Sunmaila Aderemi Jimoh Modern Shops and Motor Park in Ibadan North Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to organised trading and environmental orderliness.
The project, executed by the Ibadan North Local Government under the leadership of its Chairman, Oluwaseun Olufade, comprises 540 modern market spaces and supporting facilities aimed at decongesting roadsides and improving commercial activity in the Bodija axis.
Governor Makinde named the market after the Babaloja of Bodija Market, Sunmaila Aderemi Jimoh, in recognition of his contributions to market development and trader coordination in the area.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the governor disclosed that the 540 stalls were allocated to traders free of charge, describing the move as part of a deliberate strategy to provide viable alternatives before enforcing environmental and traffic regulations.
The event was attended by the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, alongside other state government officials, local government functionaries, market leaders and traders.
Officials said the new market and motor park are expected to enhance urban aesthetics, reduce roadside trading and traffic congestion, and provide safer, more hygienic spaces for commercial activities around Bodija Market.
The commissioning adds to a series of market redevelopment and urban renewal projects undertaken by the Makinde administration across Oyo State, with a focus on balancing economic livelihoods with environmental compliance.
