The 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has ushered in the year 2026 with a clarion call for “socio-economic rejuvenation” across the ancient city. In a widely circulated New Year message, the monarch urged indigenes and residents alike to rededicate themselves to the unity and progress of the Pacesetter State.
The statement, signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Solomon Ayoade, on Wednesday, emphasized that the year 2026 must be a turning point for the city. The Olubadan noted that while the city has faced various challenges in the past year, the collective resilience of Ibadan people remains their greatest strength.
A Vision for a “Modern Ibadanland”
Central to the monarch’s message was the concept of a “modern Ibadanland.” Oba Ladoja challenged residents to look beyond tribal and religious differences and focus on the shared goal of making Ibadan a global hub for business and culture.
“I urge both indigenes and residents to be resolute on the progress and unity of Ibadanland so that we may jointly realize the modern Ibadanland of our dreams,” the monarch stated. He further shared a personal resolution, declaring his commitment to spending the remainder of his life serving God and humanity as a pillar of support for the city.
Traditional Leaders Called to Action
In a move that signals a more active traditional council, the Olubadan called on all traditional title holders in Ibadanland to align with his 2026 roadmap. He identified several key priority areas where he expects his council members and the government to focus:
Security: Strengthening local vigilance to ensure safety in all 11 Local Government Areas.
Urban Renewal: Supporting the government’s efforts to modernize city infrastructure without losing Ibadan’s cultural identity.
Ending Land-Grabbing: Taking a firm stand against illegal land seizures that discourage investment.
Industrial Resuscitation: Reviving moribund companies to create jobs for the teeming youth population.
Commending the Security Forces
Oba Ladoja also took a moment to praise the various security agencies in Oyo State for their heightened performance during the festive period. He acknowledged that the relative peace enjoyed during the crossover celebrations was a result of the synergy between the police, local hunters, and the Amotekun Corps.
He urged the security forces not to “rest on their oars,” reminding them that the safety of the people is the foundation of any economic growth the city hopes to achieve in the new year.
Preserving the Yoruba Heritage
As the custodian of Ibadan’s culture, the monarch reminded the people that “modernity” should not mean the death of tradition. He emphasized that the preservation of the Yoruba language and heritage remains a core duty for every household in the city.
As the “Rail Rush” at Moniya and the swarm of brands at Agbeni Market show, Ibadan is changing fast. The Olubadan’s message serves as a reminder that for the city to truly pace-set in 2026, its people must move forward together with one voice.
