Women Must Be Allowed To Make Their Own Choices- El Rufai

The Wife of the Kaduna State Governor Mrs Hadiza El Rufai has emphasized the importance of empowering women in the society to make their own choices as it concerns their life. This in her view is the core of feminism. Mrs El Rufai made this disclosure in Ibadan recently at the book reading and signing event of her book titled the Abundance of Scorpion.
The event which was held at the premises of the Booksellers Limited, Ibadan and was anchored by popular Ibadan On Air Personality Ronke Giwa Onafuwa had in attendance people from all works of life.

She objected to the prevailing radical view of feminism that abounds in the society among younger women and advocated for the ability of women to make their own choices. According to her, “You can be a feminist and be a house wife because that is your choice. It is the choice you have made. I think what a lot of feminist are against is somebody else controlling their own choices maybe a father, a brother, or a father figure telling them what to do and what not to do. You should be able to make your own choices in life. So if you choose to be a full time house wife, it is fine”
She however cautions that it is important that a woman has a source of livelihood independent of her husband income as insurance for future unforeseen circumstances. “I believe that even if you are a woman that has a very caring and supportive husband as a good provider, I think it is important for you to have something of your own; to have some form of financial independence. It might not be as much as what your husband has but what is yours is yours.”

This reality is very much represented in the Book “The Abundance of Scorpion”
The book which is her first is existential piece of work, though fictional, that x-rays the travails of women in the society and the crisis and challenges they face especially after the demise of the husband or the ‘father of the House’.
The book was read and reviewed to positive and vibrant reviews by people present who showered accolades on her for taken out time to impart the society and boost literary activities especially among the women folk.
Mrs Hadiza El Rufai underscored the fact that it took her five years to complete the book amid personal and political challenges. She noted that she was inspired by her daughter, who took time to vet and critique the book while she was writing. She however lost her to the cold hands of death before the completion of the book. This according to her further inspired her to form a foundation in her name through which the young girl child her inspired to write and most importantly get educated in preparations for future life challenges.
Speaking with our correspondent after the event, she reiterated the importance of educating the girl child as the only viable means to overcome the societal bottlenecks that prevent the women folk from achieving their dreams and desires. According to her, “The most important thing is education. Education takes care of almost everything. When you get more educated you are aware of your rights, you know you have more choices in life. I think it is very important to educate the girl child.”

On the religious cum ethnic violence that recently engulfed Kaduna State, she emphasized the importance of tolerance among the various groups. She underlined how challenging the crisis has been for the husband the governor of Kaduna State Mallam Nasir El Rufai and hope the measure put in place by the governor will help forestall further occurrence.
“It has been quite challenging, but I think the governor is up to the task. I believe that these things will come to an end finally. This crisis has been going on for years and I think the way we have been handling is not the best way. I hope and I think the change in the way it is being handled now will give a better result.”
