As Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde is making effort to address the issue of environmental sanitation and as well, put an end to indiscriminate dumping of refuse, health workers in the state have alleged past administration of making them redundant by withdrawing their operational vehicles and handing them to private consultant.
The officers made the open confession at the maiden stakeholders’ meeting conveyed by Ad Hoc Committee set up by the governor to address the issue of environmental sanitation and waste disposal held at House of Chief, Secretariat, Ibadan today, June 17th, 2019.
The committee, which has the state Head of Service as its Chairman and Permanent Secretaries of various ministries as members will be joining by two representatives each from Health Inspectors and Head of Local Government Administration (HLA) as directed by the Head of Service to ensure all inclusive ideas.
Governor Seyi Makinde has directed that Ad Hoc committee should put in place to address environmental and waste disposal issue in Ibadan and other major cities in the state.
The health officers established that their job as environmental and health officers in the last administration was mere instructors, adding that all their operational vehicles were withdrawn and handed over to a private consultant.
While urging the state government to look into the activities of the consultant in charge of the waste collection and management (West Africa Energ), they emphasized that it is imperative for the Governor Makinde to declare state of emergency on waste management and disposal because the service of the consultant is making little or no impact.
The Ad Hoc Committee Chairman and Head of Service, Mrs. Ololade Agboola stated the meeting is line with the directive of the governor to put up a committee that will address sanitation issue in Ibadan and other major cities in the state.
According to the Head of Service, “the governor noted that indiscriminate dumping of refuse has taken over in the state and initial policies by the former administration on environmental sanitation and waste management are yielding little or no impact, hence, the reason the committee was set up.
“The governor, therefore, directed that his administration has issued a zero tolerance to refuse dumping on the median of the roads or highway in the state and anybody caught in the act of dumping refuse on the prohibited places will be sanctioned.
“Governor Makinde also directed that people should patronize approved contractors for refuse collection saying that tribunal on environmental sanitation adherence will be set up to effect the punishment.
Mrs. Agboola maintained that the state government has not disengaged the consultant, West Africa Energ from her service of refuse collection, management and transforming to wealth through recycling and generation of energy. She added that new local contractors whose jobs are on the streets have been added.
In her reaction, Chief Executive Officer, West African Energ, Mrs. Lolade Oresanya charged people to ensure compliance towards achieving a cleaner state.
“We are presently working with companies especially the recycling companies as a way to generate wealth and generate energy from the wastes in the state”.
