The governor of Osun state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola while delivering the convocation inaugural lecture of the University Of Ibadan founder’s day suggested the return to true federalism as the solution to the nation’s problems, the governor stated that the best of period of our nation hood was when true federalism thrived in Nigeria. The lecture, titled ‘Federalism, Democracy and the future of Nigeria’ took place at the Trenchard Hall on Tuesday November 11, 2014 and was attended by dignitaries including the Deputy Governor of Oyo state, Chief Moses Adeyemo The governor advised the nation to return to the system that will make the region stronger, stressing that productivity is the basis of wealth creation and he urged the nation not to rely fully on oil. He also noted that we have a federal structure in Nigeria but not federal practice.
Speaking further the governor makes an urgent call “we have the intervention of time to correct the anomaly and make federalism to thrive, we cannot blame the past from what we could have fixed because Nigerians should be able to live and participate fully in any activity in any part of Nigeria. Children should be brought up with confidence to fully develop, to appreciate life without fear in a knowledge driven society”. He stated The Vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Isaac Adewole, while delivering his opening remarks said the convocation lecture should have been delivered last year, November 13, 2013 but had to be postponed because of the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). He noted that the lecture serves as a platform to speak to the nation on issues that are critical and controversial. Adewole, hinted that the lecturer would not only analyse but proffer solutions to the issues.
