Contrary to the directive of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji that Egungun festival is not a license for hoodlums to unleash terror and violence on the society, the Oyo State Police Command has paraded three suspected hoodlums for breach of peace and vandalism.
The state Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, who disclosed this at a press briefing held at the Police Command Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, said that the suspects identified Mohammed Adewale, 20, Kazim Akinyemi 22, and Olawale Muideen 34 were arrested at Oranyan in Ibadan South East Local area of the state.
Olukolu disclosed that a distress call from members of the public at Ogboriefon and Kobomoje areas prompted officers of the force attached to Divisional Patrol Team, Idi Aro, who are on monitoring of the popular Alapansanpa masquerade to the scene of the incident. The Police Commissioner mentioned two Toyota cars as property vandalized by the hoodlums.
Oba Adetunji, who regretted pockets of violence recorded in the previous years’ Egungun festivals, has warned that there would be zero-tolerance for violence this year. He clarified that Egungun festival is a month long celebration of the rich custom and tradition hence, calls peaceful celebration among diverse people of the ancient town.
Olubadan has also called on the relevant stakeholders to join hands with the law enforcement agents to maintain peace and order, warning that any masquerader who goes against the route lined up for him risks the wrath of the law.
