Council Of State Approves #27,000 Minimum Wage

The National council of state has approved a new minimum wage of 27,000 for workers in the country. This decision was arrived at today during the council of state meeting held at the presidential villa. In the same vein federal workers are to be paid #30,000 new minimum wage.
The council of state also approved the periodic review of the minimum wage at 5 years interval.
Making this disclosure at the end of the meeting, the minister of labour and productivity, Dr Chris Ngige revealed that the council of states made the resolution after due consideration of the tripartite committee recommendation of #30,000, the state government recommendation of #22,700 as well as federal government recommendation of #24,000.
He further noted that state would be at liberty to review the salary of their workers upward as they see appropriate.
With this development the president will on Wednesday transmit the new approved minimum wage to the National Assembly for necessary enactment.
The council of state meeting had in attendance former heads of states such as a former head of Nigeria’s Interim National Government, Ernest Shonekan; former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan and former military head of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Also in attendance were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the Senate President Bukola Saraki.
The meeting also had in attendance, State governors including those of Borno, Ebonyi, Osun, Kebbi, Plateau, Adamawa, Kogi, Edo, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ekiti, Zamfara.
The Nigerian Labour Congress NLC had earlier in the year embarked on a nationwide protest and rally aimed at urging the Presidency to expedite action on the transmission of their demand to the National Assembly for necessary passage into law vowing not to consider a reduction in the #30,000 minimum wage approved by the tripartite committee set up by the federal government.
